Manteno gas fireplace will not stay lit: it was the thermopile, not the valve
A common fall call from Manteno’s subdivisions: the pilot lights, the burner runs for a while, then everything shuts down. Here is how we track it.
The complaint
The fireplace in a 2004 house on Manteno’s north side would light on the first cold evening, burn for ten or fifteen minutes and shut down. Relight it and the same thing. The homeowner had already been quoted a new gas valve by someone over the phone. We do not quote gas valves over the phone.
How a millivolt fireplace works
Most direct-vent gas fireplaces of that era use a millivolt system. The pilot flame heats a thermopile, a small stack of thermocouples, which generates a few hundred millivolts of electricity. That current holds the main gas valve open. No batteries, no house power. If the thermopile is weak, dirty or misaligned, it produces enough voltage to keep the pilot on but not enough to hold the main valve open under load, especially on a cold night when everything starts out cold. The fireplace lights, the voltage sags as the burner draws, and the valve drops out.
The test
We put a meter on the thermopile terminals. A healthy one reads around 400 to 750 millivolts with the burner off and stays above roughly 200 with it on. This one read 310 cold and dropped to 140 with the burner running. Cleaning the pilot assembly and repositioning the thermopile in the flame gained some, but it was tired. A new thermopile is a modest part and a fifteen-minute job. The fireplace has run all season since.
The gas valve was fine. Replacing it would have cost several times as much and fixed nothing. This is why the tune-up includes a meter reading every year: a thermopile that is weakening in September is a fireplace that will quit in December.

What is the difference between a thermocouple and a thermopile?
A thermocouple produces a tiny voltage to prove the pilot is lit. A thermopile produces enough to run the main valve. Millivolt fireplaces have both or a combined unit.
